Name: Rene Brager
Artist's statement: I am inspired by many things – birds, flowers, landscapes and cityscapes, and I usually try to capture the mood or atmosphere in a scene. My paintings tell a story of some kind, whether it is the tension between an animal and its prey or the vast empty space and light in a remote landscape. I don’t try to achieve a perfect representation but rather to capture the essence of the scene through the use of the many characteristics inherent in the watercolour medium – transparency, granulation leading to texture and spontaneity.

Artist's statement: My landscapes are grounded in memories of the river red gums and mallee soil of my childhood. They portray a living and forever changing environment which is built up of new life and ancient layers of decayed plant and animal matter. Faces, also, are forever changing, a reflection of genetic make-up and a lifetime of experience. In both landscapes and portraits, working in layers, I struggle to portray the present and allow for the element of change.

Artist's statement: I choose to paint with watercolour and mixed media and enjoy experimenting with different techniques to capture a variety of subjects.
My aim is to always capture and feature the light and resulting shadows.
It is also important that I feel a strong connection with all of the subjects I choose to paint.
I would like my work to re-educate people’s perception of watercolour by demonstrating the scope of the watercolour medium.
As with other mediums, watercolour can be used loosely in an impressionistic manner, however it also has the ability to rival all mediums where realism is depicted.
It is my belief that watercolour has the added advantage of a luminous and transparent quality.

Name: Cath Varcoe
Artist's statement: My paintings come from many sources of inspiration, some are created purely from my love for vibrant colour and the fascination I have with seeing colours dance and blend on the canvas. These paintings also reflect whatever mood I am in at the time that the painting is done.
Usually my abstract landscapes are no planned and often seem to take on their own story as the paint is applied. When I paint a portrait is often to depict a feeling or a personality. Portraits come from a deeper place in my heart and are carefully thought about and are meaningful to me. I find these paintings difficult to part with. My floral paintings are purely for joy and to brighten a room. I like these paintings to be big and colourful and uncluttered.
I paint in both oils and acrylics, sometimes I use pastels or charcoal for portraits of people and pets. Ideas for art are all round me and constantly filling my head, paintings seem to come easily and quickly and it is the most relaxing thing I can ever image doing. Inspiration is always there, the trick is to sit still, listen to a good cd and let it flow.
