Portraits of Place Film Project

The Chair of Arts Upper Hunter Inc, Stuart St Hill, announced recently that Arts Upper
Hunter had been successful in obtaining $17,288 funding for an exciting film making
workshop from Arts NSW, through their 2008 Cultural Grants program.

"In this highly competitive field, it is great for our community to gain these funds,’ he said. ‘It
will provide an opportunity for people to learn new skills whilst also enabling them to spend
time with other people interested in similar pursuits. In this region it is also about gaining
skills in a medium that is readily transportable, and can make connections over greater
distances. Participants will also gain skills that can add another dimension to their existing
work medium and give them the means to promote their own work. It will give people in
regional areas access to skills, professional networks and support to explore and develop their
ideas".

The grant for the project, Portraits of Place assisted with the delivery of a series of film
production workshops in Dungog and Gloucester. The workshops developed skills in the
areas of storytelling, interviewing, developing creative strategies, methods, filming, script writing,
audio recording and the use of software and editing programs. The workshops were presented by The Hero Project team of Carl Kuddell, educator, award winning TV producer and filmmaker, Jennifer Lyons-Reid, creative director and Felix Weber, youth peer-educator and GFX specialist.

Participants aged from 12 -65 came together to determine a topic, genre, and tone. They worked together to research, gather footage, write scripts, act, edit and produce  two 5-7minute films released in July. The inaugral screening was held at the Dungog Cinema where an audience of 75 odd people came to see what they had done. ''Thrilled" and so "Dungog". Were some of the comments, others were heard to say I have often wanted to make a film and never thought I could, now I think I could have a go. Calls have been coming in from people wanting to acquire the films and we are hoping to have copies available for sale at the VIC's in both towns shortly.
