Teatro Exo - A public art residency project spanning 4 country towns.
Commenced in 2005, the aim of this project was to enable community members to work with a professional artist
in the development of a permanent public art work in each of four towns. The four towns involved were Merriwa, Denman, Singleton and Gloucester. Newcastle based artist, Tricia Flanagan was engaged to work with the community in each of these locations. The results of both the works produced and the process have varied greatly dependant on the people who became involved and how they wanted to work.
> Merriwa – RMB 2329
Postcards of a number of families on their farms , together with letterboxes made from materials collected from the farms were the outcomes of this project. The letterboxes are located on the fence of the Welcoming Centre in the main street of Merriwa. The letterboxes ‘talk’ – recordings of interviews with the families can be heard echoing from the letterboxes.
> Denman Creek Public Art Walk
Denman creek is an important part of the history of Denman, the care of the environment along the creek is
paramount to local residents. As part of an ongoing project to re-vitalise and protect the area a concrete path
became the focus of this project and it is lined with the names and birth dates of residents of the area provided
predominantly by the school children.
> Singleton Townhead Park Hunter River Sculpture
A group of local artists, most of whom predominantly paint and draw, moved out of their comfort zone and
embraced the making of this public sculpture. This group worked hard on every aspect of the project, from drawing up plans for the Council Planning application, to carving a river out of an old telegraph pole.
> Gloucester 10,000 Steps Interpretive Walk
5 pairs of oversized binoculars lead from the main street in Gloucester down to the river and back again. Strategically placed these binoculars tell stories at each location where photos from an event in the past have been printed onto the binoculars ‘lens’. Hence you look through the past to see the present. Local artists worked on all aspects of the project from making the moulds of the binoculars and preparing for casting, to selecting the stories and images and fi nally installing the works.
